Hydropower

Hydropower, hydraulic power or water power is power that is derived from the force or energy of moving water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes.

Prior to the widespread availability of commercialelectric power, hydropower was used forirrigation, and operation of various machines, such aswatermills,textilemachines,sawmills, dockcranes, and domesticlifts.

The total capacity installed in Romania is 6715 MW, it is the third in the list of electric energy resources in the country. The total estimated hydropower capacity of the country is huge, around 9 GW. The most important sources of hydropower are: Dunărea, Olt, Lotru, Bistriţa, Someş, Drăgan, Argeş, Dâmboviţa, Sebeş, Râul Mare, Cerna, Buzău şi Motru. There are 767 hydropower plants operating in the country, the most of them, 621, are micro-hydropower plants, under 10 MW capacity.
